As a child, Terry developed a love of art when she opened her first box of 64-count Crayola crayons. She preferred drawing on heavy shopping bags, where her white crayons could be used for accents. Later, encouraged by visits to the Santa Monica home of her paternal grandmother, she developed a love of art deco, art nouveau, and Japanese and Pacific Islander design. Other influences are Maxfield Parrish, Walt Disney, Diana Thorne, and N.C. Wyeth. She is a graduate of Minneapolis College of Art and Design with a concentration in illustration and graphic design. (Her love of Crayola crayons was eclipsed by her love for 5B graphite, Dr. Martin Dyes, and watercolors in tubes.) She loves to paint the sunsets on Deep Creek, as well as the dogwoods, redbuds, magnolias and wildlife in her yard. She also enjoys painting on unusual textures, such as banana bark and Thai bark paper. Terry divides her time between painting watercolors, acrylics, and trompe l’oeil tiles. She does commissioned work, primarily portraits, and often works long into the night with only dark chocolate and the strings of Yo Yo Ma to sustain her.
