As a signature member of the renowned American Watercolor Society, the National Watercolor Society, Virginia Watercolor Society, and others, she is one of only 129 non-Chinese watercolorists world-wide, whose paintings were juried into the prestigious Shenzhen International Watercolor Biennial Exhibition 2013-2014. This painting was also selected for their year-long Traveling Exhibition. Her work has been included in numerous important national and international watercolor shows including the American Watercolor Society Exhibitions 2011, 2012, 2013. Jan was listed as one of the best of the Contemporary Watercolor Masters in the Watercolor Artist Magazine (Feb. 2013), Guatemala's La Cuadra selected her work for the magazine's cover along with a feature article (March 2012), American Artist Watercolor, Materials, Techniques & Inspiration for Watermedia Painting. (Winter 2007), and several of her paintings were included in the book The Creative Edge, Exercises to Celebrate Your Creative Self.
Jan’s award-winning paintings are pictorial tapestries layering observations and imagination, design elements, abstract motifs, and personal symbols. Known for her watermedia paintings that record her impressions of the Maya women in Guatemala’s colorful marketplace, her works evolve through exploring the relationships of value, shape, texture and color. Though models often pose for her figurative work, she is never interested in creating an exact likeness, but rather in using the figure as a central design element. Along with weekly classes at the Peninsula Fine Arts Center in Newport News and at the Art Studio in Williamsburg, VA, she conducts national and international workshops.
